At Collective Design Studio, design unfolds through collaboration, curiosity, and hands-on exploration of materials, along with a deep appreciation for craftsmanship and artistry.
Model 1, Lamp:
The design process unfolded through dialogue and experimentation, questioning the role of objects in our daily lives, the limitations of materials, and the potential of collaboration.
The piece is crafted from Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), a native wood from the Chilean Patagonia. Its central structure houses all electrical components. During fabrication, 24 ultra-thin translucent wood sheets (each just 0.5 mm thick) are fitted into channels milled along the lateral faces of laminated wooden ribs. As light passes through the screen's fine grain, this delicate technique of woodworking enables sub-surface scattering in each sheet, resulting in a warm, gently diffused radiance. This process reveals the material’s unexpected translucency, redefining wood’s traditional role as a structural material by highlighting its surprising flexibility and potential for innovative design.
Its organic, timeless form allows the object to float in space, unbound by conventional orientations of up, down, north, or south. Breaking away from these spatial norms, Model 1 opens a channel for reinterpretation and invites collaborative possibilities.
Designed to be assembled and disassembled, Model 1 encourages modularity and shared authorship. It envisions a future where components can be co-designed and interchanged, transforming the piece into an evolving platform for creative collaboration. In this way, the project embodies material exploration and an open, adaptable design process grounded in curiosity, connection, and, most importantly, collective making.
